Penbugle Organic Farm | The Cornish Dog

Penbugle Organic Farm recently invited us for a two night stay in one of their Wigwams. Situated in St. Keyne, close to Liskeard and Duloe, the farm is the perfect place to set up camp if you’re looking to explore South East Cornwall. They’re dog friendly of course and offer a range of Bell Tents and standard camping pitches on site.

DOGSCLOSURE: We received a complimentary 2 night stay at Penbugle Organic Farm in exchange for this blogpost.

It was my first time glamping so I wasn’t sure what to expect, however I have fond memories of our annual camping trips as a child. We’d pack up the car until it was bursting with equipment and head off into the countryside. Our neighbours, their extended family and friends would join us, we were quite the crowd! Growing up in London, I didn’t have much independence as a child, so running around campsites and exploring the countryside with my friends was my idea of heaven.

The Wigwams are quite the upgrade from the damp tents I was used to as a child. They’re somewhere between a campervan and holiday lodge, with a multi-purpose living area along with a kitchen counter, kettle and toaster. A fresh water supply is just outside and I had full phone signal inside the Wigwam and in the fields. There was more than enough space for the three of us and more. The Wigwams provide a great safe space for couples or young family year round, as each one has its own heating installed.

Woody loved the window at the rear of the Wigwam, it was just the right height for him to peer out on his hind legs, keeping an eye on the rabbits in the hedgerow behind us. Bedding isn’t provided in the Wigwams and neither is crockery, so you’ll have to remember your own. We forgot to bring a bottom sheet and the foam mattresses are easy wipe, ideal for glamping in the rain but it did make them a little clingy on hot nights.

There are shared toilets, showers and kitchen facilities on site, along with small shop stocking local milk, eggs, meat and more. The toilets and showers are basic but functional, I had no problem using the facilities during our stay. I was surprised by the kitchen facilities though, as they were far more sophisticated than I had imagined.

A full stove, oven and microwave are available for you to use meaning you don’t have to rely solely on burgers and barbeques every night! There are washing up facilities too, however you’ll have to bring your own sponges, liquid and tea towels. The shop stocks a variety of essentials. The shop operates an honesty box system, whereby you pay for your items using a tin and you’re trusted to pay the correct amount. This system is common across campsites and I loved the amount of local produce available at the site.

We enjoyed exploring Looe and Polperro during our stay, both about a 20 minute drive away from Penbugle. We also explored Golitha’s Falls, a riverside walk that we’d highly recommend – expect a blogpost about our adventures there soon! Penbugle has a designated dog exercise area, which is fenced off and separate to the actual working farm. Woody used this space first thing in the morning to burn off his excess spaniel zoomies. You do have to pick up any mess after your dog but that goes without saying! There are plenty of refuse skips and recycling bins on the campsite to dispose of your waste responsibly.

On our last night at Penbugle, I was really excited to try out the fire pit. They come with every Wigwam and Bell Tent on site. I really enjoyed my barbeque with the boys, tucking in to local burgers, sausages and ciders. All polished off with toasted marshmallows around the fire – paw print shaped of course! Our trip to Penbugle was the perfect weekend escape. I purposely left my laptop at home and am so glad I did. Being able to explore South East Cornwall at my own pace was really refreshing.

I would highly recommend Penbugle Organic Farm. It’s a great place for a weekend getaway or family holiday in Cornwall. Lizzie and John who run the farm are incredibly friendly and approachable. They go above and beyond to provide for their guests. They’ve created information packs for dog owners, display leaflets about local days out and are on hand to answer all of your questions. I’m really looking forward to our next visit and Woody’s already got his eye on their Bell Tents. They’re so roomy inside and sleep up to 5 people at a time!
