Hannafore Beach | The Cornish Dog

Hannafore beach is dog friendly throughout the year. Situated in west Looe, it’s just a short walk away from the hustle and bustle of the town. There are plenty of amenities and facilities nearby, making Hannafore beach perfect for all the family. We enjoy visiting Hannafore beach throughout the year, it’s a great place for your dog to let off some steam!

Hannafore beach is a popular choice for dog owners in the summer. It’s a mixture of sand and shingle, with rock formations covered by the sea. There are plenty of friends for Woody to play with whenever we visit and I enjoy getting to know locals and holiday makers alike. There’s plenty of space for everyone, particularly at low tide, so you never feel like you’re encroaching.

Hannafore beach is family friendly, particularly during summer. Kiosks serve a variety of light refreshments, as well as both hot and cold beverages. Woody even convinced one man to share his strawberry ice-cream when we last visited, only to decide he wasn’t a fan of the flavour! There are also public toilets near the Coastguard lookout. These facilities mostly operate during the summer period, however year round amenities are available in nearby Looe.

Woody enjoys exploring the rock pools at Hannafore beach. He’s incredibly nimble, with his nose focussed to the ground. I prefer a more relaxed approach, sitting next to the sea wall and enjoying the views. Woody always finds someone to play with at Hannafore beach, be it some local dog savvy children, or a holiday pup visiting with their family. Everyone is so friendly at Hannafore!

We love paddling in the sea come summer time and exploring the rock pools in winter months. There’s a concrete path that leads you out to sea. It’s been perfect for building Woody’s confidence in water, as I’m able to walk out into the water with him. The beach looks out to Looe Island, a marine nature reserve managed by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust. You can catch a ferry to Looe island, though it isn’t dog friendly. We appreciate the views from Hannafore beach instead.

Hannafore is popular among rock poolers, especially at low tide. There are all sorts of sea anemones and crustaceans to discover. Remember to tread carefully around the rocks, as sea weed can be slippery. It’s also important to put everything back where it came from and leave the rock pools just as you found them when you leave.

I was excited to find one of the #2 Minute Beach Clean signs next to Hannafore Beach. The organisation work hard to promote litter picking across Britain’s beaches via their ever popular hashtag. Litter pickers, bin bags and other supplies are available at the sign and beach goers are encouraged to do their bit and share what they find on social media. We always try to pick up any plastic or sea glass we come across at the beach, it’s staggering how quickly you build up a collection.

If you’re planning to take part in a beach clean on your next visit, please ensure you properly dispose of any plastic or waste that you find. The last thing we want is for it to be washed back out to sea by the incoming tide! I’m in the habit of having bin bags in my car, so I can always take away beached plastic with us after a walk. I then dispose of it in household recycling if possible, otherwise it goes in the landfill bin.
