The lovely Millie, my family’s 8 year old Springer Spaniel came to stay with us for a week. She absolutely loves Cornwall and takes trips down as often as she can. Since moving back to Cornwall, I have missed Millie dearly. Her companionship and personality are so special and I was so excited to have her visit.
Our first adventure saw us heading through Carwinion Woods in the dappled sunlight. The walk from Mawnan Smith takes you right to the Helford River and is one of my favourite places to go. Now, I’m not a massive fan of walking in general but this trail is just the right length and of course the beach makes a perfect place to stop for a quick snack and dip in the water!
Millie is obsessed with water and her tennis ball. She can get quite protective, particularly when other dogs are nearby! There’s just one problem though, in her eight years of living she still hasn’t mastered dropping the ball on command. This means our games of fetch are filled with tactics, white lies and general mischievousness but I wouldn’t have it any other way!
We played by the water’s edge until our arms ached and Millie began to shiver. Though the sun was shining brightly, a strong breeze gave way to temperamental changes in temperature! We enjoyed ourselves nonetheless, despite Ryan’s metal detector running out of battery! The Helford River is rich in history, particularly from World War II. We have metal detected here once before, however we aren’t too great at predicting low and high tides! It will be great to see what treasures we unearth but only time will tell!
We had a great time walking Millie at Carwinion, a great start to her summer adventures. She’s staying with us for a few days, giving us plenty of time for more adventures! To keep up to date with our shenanigans, be sure to follow my Instagram page!
